Are we truly living in the power of Christ, or are we holding back, relying on outdated sources of strength? George Duncan, a well-known preacher, once visited friends in the English countryside. Although their home had recently been equipped with electricity, they continued to use a kerosene stove and oil lamps. Surprised, Duncan asked why they hadn’t switched to the new power. His friend laughed and said, “Yes, George, we’ve had a great change, but we just haven’t turned on the power yet.” This moment prompts us to reflect: Are we harnessing the life-giving power of the Spirit, or are we living with the same limitations, despite the transformative power available through Jesus?
Since Jesus provides life-giving power through His Spirit, we are called to live and speak with boldness. We no longer have to depend on outdated, self-imposed limits but instead can walk in freedom, hope, and the empowering presence of Christ.
In 2 Corinthians, Paul reminds us that the old covenant, based on rigid laws, could not truly bring life. But the Spirit now offers a new way—a way of true freedom and righteousness in Christ.
- Breaking Free from the Bondage of the Law: Many of us try to please God through our actions alone, thinking that adherence to rules will earn us favor. However, Galatians 2:19-21 tells us that rule-keeping alone can’t lead to true transformation. Instead, it’s the Spirit that enables us to live in Christ’s fullness.
- Embracing a New Identity in Christ: When we are joined with Christ, we are no longer bound by the old ways. Romans 6:4 describes this as a rebirth through His death and resurrection, leading to a life shaped by Christ’s righteousness.
This shift to the new covenant—"kainos" in Greek, meaning "new in kind"—isn’t just about making improvements; it’s about a complete transformation. Our relationship with God becomes unique, dynamic, and deeply personal.
The Spirit also brings a life-giving hope that displaces fear, silences self-doubt, and replaces defensiveness with confidence.
- Calming Critical Thoughts: With the hope we have in Christ, we no longer need to react out of insecurity or fear. Ecclesiastes 10:4 encourages us to remain composed even in the face of criticism, while Psalm 36:1-2 describes the peace that comes with godly self-awareness.
- Transforming Sinful Actions into Bold Hope: When we turn to Christ, He removes the veil from our hearts. This allows us to see clearly, bringing repentance, faith, and transformation. Hebrews 3:6 reminds us that Christ transforms us to reflect His image as we grow in boldness.
Consider the story of an elderly minister discouraged because only one young boy came to faith after his efforts. However, that one boy, Robert Moffat, later became a missionary who impacted countless lives. Just as that minister’s hope bore fruit over time, our hope in Christ brings transformation that extends far beyond what we can see.
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” This freedom enables us to stand firm, shine Christ’s light, and look to the future with confidence and joy.
- Standing Firm in Christ: Galatians 5:1 urges believers to stand firm in the freedom Christ has won for us, resisting any urge to fall back into bondage.
- Shining Christ’s Light: John 17:22-23 speaks of God’s glory, given to us in Christ, empowering us to shine His light and reveal His presence to the world.
- Looking to the Future with Hope: Romans 15:13 is a beautiful reminder that God fills us with joy and hope through the Spirit’s power, allowing us to face the future with courage and purpose.
After World War II, a young boy in Paris who had lost his family found himself overwhelmed with despair. Yet, through acts of kindness from local believers, he began to find hope and faith again. His story reminds us that hope in Christ can transform even the darkest situations, allowing the Spirit to bring new life where there was once despair.
When we walk in the Spirit, we are given a life of power, hope, and freedom that breaks through every barrier of fear or doubt. Instead of living in the dim light of our own efforts, we can boldly turn on the power of Christ in our lives. Let’s step forward in faith, allowing His Spirit to guide us, transforming our words and actions as we shine His light into the world. The invitation is clear: embrace His power, live boldly, and let His life-giving Spirit flow through every area of your life.
